International Patients
The California Ear Institute is a frequent destination for individuals outside of the United States who do not have viable atresia repair options in their home countries. Cash pay options are available for all patients who do not have insurance. The California Ear Institute also works with governmental socialized medicine organizations to attempt to get authorization for the surgery and payment guarantees in advance of the procedures. Please allow several months for this process to occur if payment for the surgery by your government is essential for you to be able to afford it.
The California Ear Institute also has contact with many airlines and hotels that can assist you with reduced rates for your stay in the United States.
What is the timeline for coming out to California for Surgery
There is no need to visit CEI or Dr. Roberson in person to schedule the surgery. All surgical recommendations can be made remotely. Of course, if you wish to schedule an appointment to meet Dr. Roberson in person before making a final decision, that is perfectly acceptable.
The patient and their family must arrive in California at least one day prior to their scheduled pre-operative appointment, which is generally the day before surgery. There are many good hotels in this area for longer-stay types of accommodations, and a Ronald McDonald house at Packard's Children's Hospital is only 2 ½ miles from the clinic. Assuming there are no complications, the patient can leave any time after their second post-operative check which is generally a week after the surgery.
The patient will need to complete the follow-up regimen with their local ENT described above, and Dr. Roberson will consult by telephone or e-mail with that ENT if necessary.
